Why Is My Pool Getting Algae Even Though the Chlorine Is High?

It’s a common summer frustration in Las Vegas: you test your pool and the chlorine level looks fine—or even high—but algae still starts appearing. How can that happen?

During our hottest months, chlorine level alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Several factors can make it harder for chlorine to keep your pool clear.

High CYA (Stabilizer)

Cyanuric acid, or CYA, protects chlorine from being destroyed by sunlight. But when CYA gets too high, more chlorine is needed to effectively sanitize the pool. A chlorine reading that would normally be adequate may not be enough when the CYA level is elevated. The only solution for elevated CYA levels is to drain the pool, unfortunately.

Higher Water Temperatures

Warm water creates favorable conditions for algae growth while also increasing chlorine demand. When temperatures climb during a Las Vegas summer, your pool may require more attention than it does during cooler months.

Not Enough Pump Run Time

Your pool needs adequate circulation and filtration. During extreme heat, the pump may need to run longer to properly circulate chemicals and move enough water through the filter.

More People Using the Pool

Summer usually means more swimming. Sunscreen, body oils, sweat, dirt, and other contaminants all increase chlorine demand. A heavily used pool can consume chlorine much faster than expected.

High Phosphate Levels

Phosphates are nutrients that algae can use as a food source. While maintaining proper chlorine is still the most important defense against algae, elevated phosphate levels can make an algae problem more difficult to control.

The key is keeping the entire pool in balance—not simply adding more chlorine. Proper CYA levels, circulation, filtration, water chemistry, and regular maintenance become especially important when Las Vegas temperatures soar.
